Volz spends hours meticulously calculating the proper dimensions of his pieces from every angle. Working out the dimensions on paper first, gives him an exact idea of the proportions he will need for his prototypes and final pieces.  Below is one of several calcuation sheets he made for a clay prototype that eventually was scaled into a larger-than-life snow sculpture entitled "The Good Shepherd".
