Fiberglass has many applications. Here is a sculpture of a fantasy horse.

It's also useful for moldmaking. Once the sculpture is covered with silicone, a "mother mold" or shell of fiberglass is applied as a rigid backing. Then both materials are peeled off for a perfect replica of the original piece.

      Volz used fiberglass for the body armor of this animatronic robot.  (See his head and hands.)  The foam prototype (right) shows the exterior shell that was to enclose the machinery. He reconsidered covering it up however, when many people voiced their fascination with the machinery and electronics.
