To perfect his craft, Volz has worked with a variety of materials. Learning to use each has helped him gain a better knowledge of their properties and limitations. By mastering each material, he is now able to call upon combinations of them to help him create his finished bronze pieces. Each material presents a unique challenge that allows him to hone his sculpting skills in a different way. Working with temperature sensitive snow causes him to work efficiently to quickly complete his winter sculptures. So does the quick drying nature of cement, plaster and fiberglass. Styrofoam is fragile, but if properly constructed, can provide a strong, yet lightweight infrastructure for the sculptures, much like foil. The most common medium used by Volz is clay because it can be reshaped easily and provides an excellent model from which to scale his final work. |
